Surrey Mirror Rank Hall feature

Surrey Mirror yesteryearThe Surrey Mirror of 21st January included a double-page 'Yesteryear' article on the history of the Rank Hall, to coincide with the beginning of redevelopment work. Using information assembled by Keely Harrison and Ian Hunt, the article features church members' memories of the opening ceremony,  social events, youth-clubs, and of J Arthur Rank himself, during his time as Sunday School teacher. The many plays, musicals and other productions in the hall since 1954 are also remembered.

Farewell to the Rank Hall

Rank Hall farewellAfter the evening carol service on Sunday 21st December, the congregation gathered in the Rank Memorial Hall for the last time before the official start of building the new Community Centre on the following day. The hymn 'Lord for the years' was sung, and Rev. Clive McKie gave thanks for the part the Hall has played in the life of the church over more than 50 years.

Community Centre start date agreed

Clive McKie with Building contract

The church council met on 10 December, the last ever such meeting to be held in the Centenary Room before redevelopment of the Rank Hall site. Rev. Clive McKie showed the contract which has been agreed with Hystar Construction for the building of the new Community Centre, and confirmed that building work will start on 21 December. The council approved the final arrangements for financing the work, the first phase of which is expected to be completed in October 2010.

It is hoped that an article on the history of the Rank Hall since its opening in the 1950s can be published in the local press. Please contact us if you have photos or particular memories of events there that you can contribute.

The summer music festival once more includes a series of lunchtime concerts in the church, from 20-25 July at 12.30pm. More details at www.reigatesummermusic.org

The audience are invited to make donations to the Community Centre redevelopment project.

Gilbert & Sullivan triple-bill fundraiser

Trial by Jury

Utopians Unlimited performed three pieces on 20 June to raise funds for the Community Centre redevelopment. Trial by Jury was written by Gilbert and Sullivan together, while Cox and Box and The Zoo were early collaborations between Arthur Sullivan and other librettists.

Review of HMS Pinafore by Tony Flook

HMS PinaforeHow encouraging it was to see the church full to watch the talented and experienced Utopians Unlimited take to the ‘stage’ for this lively production of a Gilbert and Sullivan favourite.

HMS Pinafore performance

Utopians Unlimited, an amateur operatic group that includes several Reigate Methodist members, will be performing Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore on 21 June. This is a fully acted and costumed production, to the same high standard as The Sorcerer and Gondoliers which Utopians have previously performed.

Tickets will be £10 on the door, or £8 in advance (available from Anne Miller, Ros Norman, Ernest Shannon and Pam Mayhew) and proceeds will go to the church Development fund.

Redevelopment website now live

There is now a separate website for the redevelopment project at www.reigatecommunitycentre.org.uk (the site was set up some time ago, but only had one page). It will be updated with news of fundraising, financial information, and building progress when that starts. There is a gallery of fundraising pictures, which urgently needs some more contributions !
